Welcome to the Government website of the Autonomous Island of Anjouan (also known as Ndzuwani or Nzwani) Anjouan is an autonomous island, part of the Union of Comoros. The island is located in the Indian Ocean. The capital of Anjouan is Mutsamudu and its population as of 2006 is about 277,500. The total area of the island is 424 sq. kilometres (163 sq. mi.).
The Governor of Anjouan is the head of Anjouan, The position ( initially called President ) was firstly established in 1997 after the Declaration of independence of Anjouan. Secondly the position became President of the autonomous island of Anjouan following the adoption of the Union of Comoros Constitution of 2001. However in 2010 the Island adopted to change from President to Governor.
Today’s Governor is Mr Anissi Chamsidine, who was elected on 27th December 2010.
The recent heavy rains and flash flooding in Anjouan has caused some problems to the whole of the Comoros Islands, OCHA, UNICEF and the World Food Programme have sent emergency support to the Comoros Islands including Anjouan, where the Government has declared a State of Emergency.
There is now some peace and calm in Anjouan, business is trying to get back to normal and more International companies are investing in Anjouan. There are now 3 International Banks operating in Anjouan and there are many investment opportunities for foreign investment including the development of the production of Vanilla & Ylang-Ylang cloves, which are used in perfume production. The reconstruction of the Anjouan hydro-electric plant, development of the Anjouan fisheries and especially the development of tourism. The Island of Anjouan is beautiful and unspoilt. Anjouan would welcome investment into the communication system especially introducing High speed broadband.
Anjouan is always looking for help to combat Malaria by way of funding and with the hopeful help of a variety of charitable foundations and is hoping to set up a Malaria vaccination clinic with full medical assistance and providing basic support for transportation for Government departments such as schools and hospitals, Another project for Anjouan investment is the process of assisting in the battle against neonatal causes, Diarrhoeal diseases, measles’s and pneumonia especially in children in Anjouan and in the whole of Comoros.
Anjouans offshore sector which has been in operation since 2003, has now established itself as an International offshore regime.
The new constitution of 2002 clarifies Anjouan's status as an autonomous island within the new Union of Comoros. The government of the State of Anjouan has full control over economic development and foreign investment and this is stated in Article 10 of the Anjouan constitution.
Anjouan is also positioned on strategic shipping routes and it's deep water harbour in the capital of Anjouan, Mutsamudu, enables large container ships and cargo liners to dock, making Anjouan a very attractive centre for potential investors and especially cruise ships.
