Colonel Mohamed Bacar, President of the Autonomous Island of Anjouan

Biography

Colonel Mohamed Bacar was born on 5 May 1962 in Barakani, Anjouan.

After leaving school, he went to France where he completed his studies at the naval college in Brest. After a successful time overseas, he returned to Anjouan where he entered the police force, eventually becoming head of the state of police for the national harbour.

In 1991 Colonel Bacar underwent further training in the United States of America, in English and maritime law. After spending five years to complete his studies, he then moved back to France in 1996 and entered the Gendarmerie state school of Melun. Upon graduation Colonel Bacar returned to Anjouan.

Arriving back at a time of political upheaval for the island, he became actively involved in the negotiations to resolve the problem of autonomy for the islands of the Comoros. As a leading delegate for the Anjouanese, Colonal Bacar played an instrumental role in the 2001 'Accord Cadre de Fomboni' which put an end to the separatist crisis and saw the creation of a new 'Union of Comoros'.

In March 2002 the first presidential elections on the autonomous island of Anjouan were held and Colonel Bacar was rewarded for his tireless commitment to autonomy and was elected to become Anjouan's first President.
