  Parliament

History

Up until Anjouan was granted autonomy, the political decision making was centred around Moroni on Grand Comore. With the birth of autonomy came the creation of Anjouan's first parliament.

Parliament was established in 1999 alongside the new constitution of the island. Members of parliament are elected for a four year period of office after which, fresh elections are held. Anjouan is split into five governing districts and each district elects five members of parliament. Therefore, twenty-five MPs sit at council in total.

The five districts are as follows:

  1. Mutsamudu
  2. Ouani
  3. Domoni
  4. Nyoumakele
  5. Sima

Parliament is housed at Dar-Nur which is located in Hombo, a district of the capital, Mutsamudu. Hombo is in north Mutsamudu and houses numerous other governmental buildings and consulates, plus the national stadium.
